SmartSight Overview
SmartSight: Minimally invasive lenticule extraction

SmartSight is a modern laser eye procedure for the refractive correction of myopia and astigmatism without the creation of a corneal flap.

This advancement of lenticule extraction is characterised by intelligent eye tracking with pupil detection and cyclotorsion compensation.

The SCHWIND ATOS femtosecond laser enables minimally invasive lenticule extraction and flap creation with one device. With pupil recognition and cyclotorsion compensation, the smart system enables precise centring of the patient’s eye along the visual axis. Thanks to the fast system test, the laser is ready for use within a short time.
The compact device design is consistently designed for flexibility and efficiency in clinical use.

SmartSight suitability criteria

We can only use the SmartSight laser treatment for nearsighted patients with myopia -0.5 to -10.0 diopters and astigmatism up to -5.0 diopters.

If you don’t meet these criteria, we can often achieve the same results with a Femto-LASIK operation.

With the “keyhole method”, we no longer create a flap (corneal flap). We perform the procedure through a tiny incision in the cornea. This means we interfere as little as possible with the cornea and the healing process is very short.
The femtosecond laser marks the tissue to be removed for better vision. Only the femtosecond laser is used. This method is relatively new and is only used in a few eye laser clinics worldwide.

How SmartSight works

With the “keyhole method”, we no longer create a flap (corneal flap). We perform the procedure through a tiny incision in the cornea. This means we interfere as little as possible with the cornea and the healing process is very short.

The SCHWIND ATOS femtosecond laser marks the tissue to be removed for better vision.

This method is relatively new and is only used in a few eye laser clinics worldwide.

Advantages and disadvantages of SmartSight
The advantages
  • The procedure does not require creating a flap, as is the case with other laser treatment methods.
  • We can correct the vision through a tiny keyhole opening
  • We can perform the entire procedure in one step using one laser
  • SmartSight can correct myopia up to -10 dioptres.
  • The treatment only takes a few minutes.
  • The recovery is very quick. You can return to your usual activities shortly after treatment.
The disadvantages of SmartSight
  • Long-term studies only since 2011: (The method has only been on the market since 2011)
  • The treatment is only suitable for myopia patients. We cannot use it to correct farsightedness.
  • It is not possible to repeat the treatment. Should you require any subsequent treatment, you will need to use an alternative vision correction method.
SmartSight risks
Risks:
  • There is no flap with SmartSight, so there are no flap-related complications.
  • The risk of dry eye is lower compared to Femto-LASIK
  • Due to modern eye laser profiles, the risk of halos/glare/starbursts is extremely low.
  • Full vision recovery can be up to 1 month.
SmartSight options and alternatives
Alternative treatments include:
  • ICL: If the visual defect is too large or the cornea too thin, we can insert a phakic lens (ICL). With this, we can correct short-sightedness up to 18 dpt.
  • Monovision: We can use this method to treat presbyopia.
  • If a patient is farsighted, either Femto-LASIK, ICL or lens exchange is performed.
SmartSight steps
Micro-incision technology – minimally invasive and gentle

With SmartSight, the SCHWIND ATOS femtosecond laser forms a pre-calculated lenticle in the intrastromal tissue of the cornea and prepares small, peripheral incisions in the uppermost corneal layer as lenticle access. After the laser procedure, the lenticule is detached through the small incisions. The incisions allow the ophthalmic surgeon to remove the lenticle easily and with a view through the microscope integrated in the SCHWIND ATOS.

SmartSight completely eliminates the need for a corneal flap and there is no laser ablation as with the excimer laser.

SmartSight Scientific research and results

The first scientific publications are in the making. The lenticule extraction method has been on the market since 2011, hence the scientifically confirmed clinical results.
